PEACEFUL, RESTFUL, JOYFUL
Alan and Leigh bought their dream house, a small Sante Fe adobe with beautiful desert mountain views in 1996. The horse facility was completed in December 2003. Joy Ranch is located in north Phoenix, 3 miles NE of the junction of I17 and Carefree Hwy. Their desire was to create a place where students would feel safe, physically, mentally and emotionally, to experience whatever they would allow. (Sometimes a riding lesson isn`t just a riding lesson!) Leigh is very much into function and Alan needs his surroundings to be pleasing to the eye. They have built a working facility where horses and people thrive!
The Arizona friendly barns house 10 horses in large, airy stalls with a turn out area that has great, soft footing. There is a railed arena a bit larger than a small dressage court (20 x 40 meters); a super size for young horses and riders who prefer solid boundaries. Instead of a round pen, Leigh wanted a square pen, so horses and riders could choose to make circles or squares, so, there is a 60` square pen where students can experience join-up work and assertiveness training, horses can learn ground driving and have their first under-saddle experiences. In addition, Joy Ranch has a full size dressage court as well as a track where horses and riders can do something other than arena riding. Coming from a show horse background, Alan and Leigh know the importance of footing: their desire was to have somewhat different footing in each working area so horses would be able to handle changes with ease.
There are many places to sit and watch a lesson, enjoy the ambiance, journal, meditate, or just BE!
The Phoenix Sonoran Preserve is just down the dirt road for wonderful trail riding and is isolated just enough to feel that you`ve gotten away from it all. Desert habitat and foliage are abundant and beautiful.
There are Hampton Inns at Anthem and Happy Valley both about 10 minutes from Joy Ranch.
